Celebrating the Wins | Evolving the Declaration of Geneva

Last Thursday the teams at MedRecruitMedWorld and MedCapital took a moment to celebrate evolving the Declaration of Geneva to include Doctor Wellbeing.

It was so satisfying to see all the work everyone has put in come to fruition and it was important to take the time to recognise the impact this change can have. As the driving force behind this change and our Managing Director, Dr Sam Hazledine said:

“We’ve done it team. We have effectively evolved the status quo of the entire medical profession. Think about that. This impacts everyone on earth, and every future person on earth. It’s huge!”

Here we think it’s important to celebrate the wins, both big and small. From recognising the exceptional doctors and medical staff we work with, to a coffee shout for a staff member who’s gone above and beyond. We even start our weekly leadership meetings with the agenda point ‘Good News’.

The journey to evolve the Declaration of Geneva has been a process and while it’s been something Sam has thought about for a while, the petition itself was first set up on MedWorld two years ago in October 2015.

After campaigning to evolve the Declaration of Geneva, our modern day Hippocratic Oath, to include the need for doctors to take care of themselves, we collected over 4,500 signatures of support. Sam then took this in October 2016 to the World Medical Association’s (WMA) General Assembly in Taiwan, to the working group tasked with reviewing the Declaration of Geneva.

In October 2017, two years after the petition was started, at the General Assembly in Chicago, USA, the WMA voted unanimously to amend the Declaration of Geneva, the modern-day Hippocratic Oath, the value-set of doctors, to acknowledge the importance of doctor wellbeing.

So while we tucked into a celebratory piece of cake last Thursday, Sam’s voice called out across the room:

“Enjoy this, it’s not every day that you CHANGE THE WORLD!!!”
